At the start of every year its a good idea to stop and take inventory of where you are, where you are going and where you should be going. That said I have done the same. I wrote out my learning/skill goals for the year on the white board in my office and encouraged my assistant to do the same:
I also follow a number of podcasts and you-tubers who talk about the tech industry. One of these is NetworkChuck. He spoke in a video about the top 5 skills for 2020 which somewhat lines up with my list. Here’s his list with my comments on relevant certs:
- Linux – Linux +, LPIC- 1: Linux Administrator
- Python – Cisco DevNet??
- Cloud – AWS Cloud Practitioner, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals,
- Ethical Hacking – CEH, EjPT
- Security – Security+
I do realize my list is more exhaustive and may not be super realistic but I am glad that I’ve gotten one item off. I passed my Security+ today.
I do feel like I have allot to learn as my background has largely been configuration of infrastructure devices (switches, routers, firewalls, PBX) and security has a whole lot more to deal with so this will not be my last cert in this area.
My next step will be studying for the AWS CCP. I could have gone down the azure route but I actually have some experience with AWS and feel like this is an easy win. As always I am open to any suggestions the community might have on this.
