Anyone who knows me knows that I enjoy reading and have been trying to read more over the past couple of years. My plan for 2022 was to read 52 books (One book a week), but as of December 13, I have only got to 41, and barring some miracle, I won’t meet this goal. I, however, am not as disappointed as I might have been, considering a lot happened this year, including the birth of my son and working a degree, all while holding a full-time management position and doing church work. There’s always next year, right?
My reading choices over the last few years have made me learn a few things, namely:
- I really enjoy reading challenges as they force me to read books that I might have otherwise not considered.
- If I don’t fill the list early, I will have nothing planned to read and just read anything that comes up. This is what happened this year when I was following the Tim Challies reading challenge and ended up ditching it because I didn’t exactly have some things to read.
- The Kindle is a game-changer. I know many people argue for paper books, and I was one of them, but most people who make that argument for me don’t read as much as I do. I have found it way more convenient to use the kindle in bed (and not have my wife complain about the noise of me turning pages). It also is so much easier to carry around and read whenever.
- My pocket affects my reading- I hate spending money, so I always look for bargains. Books are no exception, and most of the books I have are bought at discounted prices. Seeing as I read primarily on Kindle, I look for deals, and this affects what I have available to read. Perhaps I should stop being so cheap and pay full price.
- Some really good books start really bad. One of the things I’ve noticed is that I fly through some books, and some I am at a snail’s pace because it is so taxing and laborious to get through until the book gets interesting ( The Spider network is one such book). Knowing this is both a blessing and a curse, makes me want to stick with it, but often is draining as I’m reading and wondering if I made the right choice. Sometimes I may quit and have wasted 2 weeks.
- Recommendations are scarce. I repeatedly ask for book recommendations but don’t get many. Are people just not reading these days?
